The social issues presented in Caroline Paul's memoir do not necessarily affect my life directly, but will show up in my near future. Since I am a firefighter explorer and have a direct view of the inner workings of fire departments, sexism does not seem to be an issue at all anymore. I would like to work for the Glendale FD after high school, during college, where I am almost certain that I will be exposed to the events Paul discussed in her book. I do not believe sexism will be a problem by then, because society is evolving so quickly, but all the other aspects that come along with the job. Most of her probationary year experiences she talked about appear to be true as I see them in person. It made me realize that not everything we want happen in life. One can get moved from one location to another, from a happy place to a boring place to a strict place. We must be prepared in life for everything. One main aspect that I thought to be important for me to adapt to, that will affect me is the site of death or the process of death. Although it is a natural process in the life cycle it is difficult to adapt to knowing that one could have stopped it or saved the person from death. This site is one that will affect me in the future, reading this book made me realize that it is some thing that I must consider before entering the field uneducated of what would be coming towards me.
