"I pull my bag out of the car and stand staring at the open station doors" (Paul 31). Caroline Paul says this as she exits her car, pulls out her belongings and stares at the station. She stares at her new brick home, her new action packed work place, and her new family of tough men. This was the first day of her new life, living on the edge and putting her hands in the life of her new family. She knew it would not be easy, she even doubted herself, but she was ready. This is a foreshadow of the events that will occur in her new home between the family and out in the field. Her life will now be filled with memorable events, good and bad, worth remembering and not worth remembering. As she stands outside she thinks and questions herself, her capabilities, and questions if this job is really for her. After all she is a female attempting a mans job. Over and over she recites to herself while she stares at the station, "fireman, fireman" not fire woman. She opens her bag, looks at her helmet and turnouts, and walks in. As nervous as she felt she knew she was ready.
