Mia Hamm is a part of the United States' most memorable Women's National team. Their team was able to win the Women's World Cup in 1991, and gold in the 1996 Olympics. Throughout the course of the book, Mia is constantly mentioning her teammates. According to her, to win a soccer game means that every player came through on their designated roles, and they won that game collectively, no matter which player scored which goal. The team bond they shared was the reason why they were able to conquer their goals. The connection I have with this comes through the fact that I also play team sports, whether its basketball or volleyball. I have experienced all the aspects playing a team sport has, and agree with Mia that teammates are what matters at the end. Through open communication, and an irreplaceable team bond, we are able to win games. Each individual is assigned a position based on their abilities, and is expected to perform that ability to their potential. If every player plays their potential, it is highly doubtful that the team will lose. As it happened in the Women's World Cup in 1991 and the Olympics in 1996 for Hamm and her teammates, the same situation happened to my volleyball team in 2011. No team in Pilibos history had ever made it to CIF playoffs. However, our team was on a mission to change that statement. Through Mariann's incredible hits, Kristina's consistent serving, Natalie's unforgettable sets, Gina's remarkable saves, and Areni and Ani's powerful blocks, our team made it to the quarterfinals in the playoffs. Each player had their own ability, and in the end, those abilities came in unison to form a championship team.
