‘Ambulance Girl” is an extremely descriptive book about the author’s, Jane Stern’s, feelings and how those feelings shaped her life. At age fifty-two she had depression and claustrophobia. She said, “I wanted her life-but what the hell would I do with it? The flowers and fruits would all wilt and rot as I sat in my green chair and watched the Ricki Lake Show” (Stern 15). This quote is from the part when she visited her and her husband’s show’s producer at Minneapolis. Since she was psychologically unstable, tainted with claustrophobia, depression, and anxiety, she did not live like a normal person. Unlike years before, she never invited her friends over, never dressed, always had a dirty look, and was anxious over all. At her producer’s house, she was not jealous, but rather regretful that she did not have the well-living life that Sally had. Sally seemed so perfect to her that she wanted to have her life. Since she realizes what kind of psychological problems she personally has, she did not think that she deserved all the important things Sally possessed, like her garden, children, and cooking skills. Moreover, this quote clearly tells the reader that Stern realizes that she is specifically diagnosed with depression, anxieties, and a number of phobias. It is hard and sad to know that a person is aware of what is happening to her. Yet she tries extremely hard to get herself together and go on trips with her husband.
