“I hate myself. I have almost always hated myself. I have good reasons for hating myself, but it’s not for bad things I’ve done. I do not hate myself for betrayals, for going behind the back of someone who trusted me. I hate myself because I am not beautiful. I hate myself because I am fat.” This quote was said I the beginning of the book called “Fat Girl.” Just by reading this quote, one can understand the main topic of this autobiography; a sad story of a girl who does not feel comfortable with herself. As I was reading this quote, I stopped because I could not believe what I had just read. I could not understand how someone can hate themselves because of their appearance, not because they have done horrible things in life. With the short yet bold sentences, it had the ability to make me feel sad because of the amount of hate and disappointment towards her for being the way she is. One could tell how much negative attention and comments she had received from people who criticized her looks and weight. She was never given the chance to accept herself for who she is because people constantly reminded her of how useless and ugly she is. Due to the constant reminders and devastation, she was never able to be happy in her own skin. Instead of praising herself for all the good she had done, she is concentrating on what others have taught her about herself. Their constant insults have been engraved in her heart; therefore she only classifies herself as fat. By reading this line, the reader can tell the tone of the story. The author has not had a happy life. She is ignoring all the other great aspects that make her who she is because no one has ever pointed out those traits.
