"Those who say they would rather fight to the death than be raped are fools. I would rather be raped a thousand times. You do what you have to."(Sebold 9) It did not take long for author, Alice Sebold, to preach her readers about rape. When my eyes first met contact with these strong words, I could not help but read them over and over again. At first, I was not able to comprehend the text that was written before me; I always thought that someone would rather die than live such an awful and devastating experience. However, she then compared herself with a female who had been raped a few month before her in the same location. The only difference between her and that woman was that the latter was killed. The poor women was not even given the chance to overcome the horrific act that was committed against her. Death only comes once in a lifetime, and when it does there is no turning back. Alice Sebold, who does not try to understate the term rape, wants to merely inform individuals that there is more to life than suffering. When a person runs into an obstacle, they still have the power and opportunity to pick themselves up and do something with their lives. For example, this quote clarifies that Alice Sebold will not just sit there and feel sorry for herself. On the contrary, she will do anything possible to find her rapist and give him the punishment he deserves. Also, she pinpoints how life is a privilege, and for someone to wish death upon themselves is foolish. Not one soul should resort to death at any given point. There is always a possibility that tomorrow will be better than yesterday; but if you are no longer living the chances dramatically and immediately drop down to zero. That is the beauty of life. Life always comes with ups and downs; but to take those downs and turn them into your strong points is what really empowers a person.
